Legal Aid Commission of Tasmania

The Legal Aid Commission of Tasmania (LACT) is a statutory authority established under Tasmania's Legal Aid Commission Act 1990. It is not attached to the government.

LACT helps people with legal problems. Its services include:

Legal advice and information

Anyone with a legal problem can:

  • attend a LACT office for free legal advice during clinic sessions conducted in:
    • Hobart from 10.30 am until 2.30 pm Monday to Friday
    • Launceston on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 12 pm until 1.30 pm
    • Devonport on Tuesday and Thursday from 1 pm until 2 p
    • Burnie on Tuesday and Thursday from 12.30 pm until 1.30 pm.

  • phone the free Legal Advice Line (details below)
  • see a LACT duty lawyer at the Magistrates' Courts who may be able to assist you if they are not too busy with other matters
  • go to the free clinics at the family law courts in Launceston and Hobart – call 1300 366 611 for further information
  • visit the Legal Aid Commission of Tasmania website (link below) for information about the law and LACT’s services, and to download copies of free publications about legal matters – family law topics include child support and self-help kits on children, property and representing yourself in court
  • go to community education workshops and seminars on a range of legal issues – these are usually free of charge.
