Pass a test before lodging a citizenship application

Law applies from : 1 October 2007

Most people will have to pass a test before they can apply for Australian citizenship The aim of the test is to make sure that new citizens understand the Australian:

  • system of government
  • culture, history, geography and 
  • responsibilities of citizenship.

You will need to understand basic English to pass the test.

If you fail the test

You can sit for the citizenship test as often as you like. There is no cost for sitting the test.
You must pass the test before you can apply for citizenship.

Complaints

Contact the Department of Immigration and Citizenship if you believe that you have been treated unfairly. If you can’t solve the problem, the Commonwealth Ombudsman may be able to help.
