Workplace well being strategy

Victoria Legal Aid (VLA) is committed to maintaining a motivated, productive and healthy workforce.

The workplace wellbeing strategy provides information, support and assistance to further enhance each employee’s capacity to make a valuable work contribution.

The strategy concentrates on environmental practices and aspects of physical, emotional and psychological welfare. The objective of this strategy is to establish an environment and culture that optimises the balance between work and personal needs for all VLA employees.

VLA and employees alike each carry responsibility for successfully achieving a balance between work and personal needs. VLA will provide information, policies, and strategies to assist employees achieve that balance. Employees carry responsibility for maintaining their own health and well being so that they are able to contribute meaningfully and purposefully in all aspects of life and work.

VLA sponsored health programs

VLA will provide a corporate program that aims to assist employees manage competing demands of work and personal health. Initiatives include:

  • information packs on health related topics
  • lunch time talks and seminars relating to health and work/life topics
  • health screenings (e.g. blood pressure and cholesterol checks)
  • good health bulletins on the intranet
  • flu injections
  • Hepatitis B injections for staff working in high risk areas
  • employee assistance program (confidential personal counselling).

VLA workplace well being related policies

To support this strategy, all Human Resources policies have been reviewed and new policies drafted to further enhance the program. New policies are provided as follows:

  • workplace bullying
  • critical incident de-briefing
  • environmental green initiatives

Pre-existing policies that complement the strategy include the following:

  • occupational health and safety-related policies 
  • flexible employment arrangements
  • grievance policy

Employees are encouraged to participate in the program to improve and/or maximise their own personal health and wellbeing.

Monitoring

VLA will regularly monitor the success of this program by examining the following:

  • absenteeism statistics
  • incident report and WorkCover claim statistics
  • grievance statistics
  • comment from occupational health and safety committee
  • feedback from individuals who participate in programs associated with the workplace wellbeing strategy
