Music in restaurants – new law

Date created: 31 March 2008

Applies from 7 February 2008

Any music that is played in restaurants after normal business hours must be limited to background music. Background music is described as music that allows people to hold a conversation with each other at a distanced of 600 millimetres without needing to raise their voices.

There is an exemption for people who hire a private area within a restaurant for their exclusive use.

These laws have been enacted as part of the Government's attempt to deal with the problems of alcohol related violence.
