The VLA publication Your Rights: police powers in Victoria has just been re-printed and is back on the shelves. This handy A5-sized booklet gives the public information about what to expect and what to do if approached by police – giving name and address, getting arrested, being searched, signing papers, taking part in identification parades.
There is specific information about rights for people under 18 and for people with a mental impairment.
In this edition, there are also sections about about terrorism laws, graffiti and the Victorian Charter of Human Rights.
Over the past 12 months VLA has distributed nearly 13,000 copies of Your Rights: police powers.
