Victoria Legal Aid's first federal magistrate

Date : 04 Sep 2008

Victoria Legal Aid lawyer Evelyn Bender is one of seven new federal magistrates appointed this week by the Commonwealth Attorney-General. She is the first VLA lawyer to be appointed a federal magistrate.

Ms Bender has worked at VLA as a senior family law advocate since 2005, initially while on twelve-month secondment from the Family Court. She holds a Bachelor of Jurisprudence and a Bachelor of Laws from Monash University and a Graduate Certificate of Management from La Trobe University.

In 2004, Ms Bender was awarded the Chief Justice’s Australia Day Medal for her contribution to the Family Court of Australia.

'Ms Bender's appointment is a testament to her valued expertise in the field of family law, and a reflection of the quality of lawyers here at Victoria Legal Aid,' said VLA managing director Bevan Warner.

'I am sure she will be a great asset to the Federal Magistrates Court of Australia.'

Ms Bender begins her new appointment in mid-September.
