Bushfire victims with insurance and finance issues can get help

Date : 15 Apr 2009

Victoria Legal Aid has established the Bushfire Legal Help Insurance Unit to assist bushfire victims with insurance and finance-related legal issues arising from the bushfires.

Lawyers can provide telephone and on-site advice, advocacy, and casework assistance with:

  • insurance claims and disputes
  • mortgage difficulties arising from lack of insurance, underinsurance or financial hardship
  • consumer disputes with energy, water and telecommunication providers in relation to connection, reconnection and repayment difficulties.

The unit will review requests for assistance already received on-site or by telephone to the Bushfire Legal Help Helpline, as well as take on new requests for assistance.

The unit can also provide local information and advice sessions about insurance, mortgage and consumer disputes in communities where the community or local workers feel that would be of assistance. Agencies should feel free to contact the unit to discuss community need for these sessions.
