VLA supports national Human Rights Act

Date : 07 Jul 2009

Victoria Legal Aid (VLA) has made a submission to the National Human Rights Consultation Committee supporting the implementation of a national Human Rights Act.

VLA believes that a national Act will further advance the Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act's protection and promotion of human rights.

The submission makes recommendations about:

  • legislating a Commonwealth Human Rights Act in an appropriate model
  • rights that should be included in any Human Rights Act
  • the inclusion of social and economic rights in any Human Rights Act
  • the jurisdictional reach of the Act.
