Speeding and hoon driving – new law

Dangerous driving at excessive speed is now treated as hoon driving

Drivers may have their vehicles immobilised, impounded or forfeited to the Crown under the hoon driving laws if they are charged with dangerous driving due to travelling at speeds of:

  • 45 km or more over the speed limit
  • 145 km or more if speed limit is 110 km/hour.

Increased penalties for speeding heavy vehicles

The maximum penalty for heavy vehicles that speed has been increased to 30 penalty units. 

A heavy vehicle is defined as any vehicle with a gross vehicle mass of more than 4.5 tonnes. It includes a trailer that is attached to a heavy vehicle or and a commercial bus. 

Offences against speed camera operators

It is an offence to threaten, abuse, obstruct or intimidate an operator of a speed detector or safety camera. The maximum fine is 60 penalty units.
