Date created: 04 December 2007

1. Young learner drivers

Law applies from: 1 July 2007

Changes to the law aim to make sure that new drivers get enough experience before they can hold a licence.

All learner drivers:

  • are not allowed to use mobile phones when driving (including hands-free phones)
  • must always carry their learner permits when they are learning to drive
  • must stay on their learner permits for a minimum amount of time (varies depending on their age).

Learner drivers aged under 21 must:

  • stay on L-plates for at least 12 months
  • spend a minimum of 120 hours driving before they can apply for their licence
  • do 10 hours of this driving experience at night
  • record their supervised driving hours in a log book.

New restrictions apply to probationary drivers about driving high-powered vehicles.

2. Speeding

Law applies from: 1 July 2007

If a learner is caught driving at excessive speed, the accompanying driver can be fined.
