Learning to drive – new law

1. Young learner drivers
Law applies from: 1 July 2007
Changes to the law aim to make sure that new drivers get enough experience before they can hold a licence.
All learner drivers:
- are not allowed to use mobile phones when driving (including hands-free phones)
- must always carry their learner permits when they are learning to drive
- must stay on their learner permits for a minimum amount of time (varies depending on their age).
Learner drivers aged under 21 must:
- stay on L-plates for at least 12 months
- spend a minimum of 120 hours driving before they can apply for their licence
- do 10 hours of this driving experience at night
- record their supervised driving hours in a log book.
New restrictions apply to probationary drivers about driving high-powered vehicles.
2. Speeding
Law applies from: 1 July 2007
If a learner is caught driving at excessive speed, the accompanying driver can be fined.
