Victims of crime – Tasmania

Compensation

If you are the victim of a violent crime in Tasmania you may be able to get compensation under Tasmania's Victims of Crime Assistance Act 1976.

A violent crime includes a sexual offence, an assault or injury to a person or the death of a person.

‘Victim’ means a person who dies or is injured because of a crime. This includes suffering a loss because property was damaged or destroyed during that crime.

Assistance

The Victims Assistance Unit gives information and support to victims of violent crime. The unit can also help you to apply for compensation in the Supreme Court. Most applications are made by lawyers, so get legal advice.

A Commissioner makes awards under the Act. You can apply for compensation for:

  • counselling expenses
  • medical expenses
  • loss of income
  • other expense caused as a result of the violent crime.
