Commonwealth Attorney-General visits Victoria Legal Aid
Tuesday, 12 June 2018Commonwealth Attorney-General Christian Porter toured our Melbourne office recently and spent time with staff learning about the challenges of service delivery.
Executive Director Family, Youth and Children’s Law Nicole Rich said Victoria Legal Aid welcomed the opportunity to discuss current family and civil law issues face-to-face with the Attorney-General, and showcase legal aid work.
‘It was great to hear directly from the Attorney-General about his thoughts for making the family law system better and fairer and to discuss how our practice experience could inform future policy and practice developments,’ she said.

The Attorney-General also donned a headset and sat in on a call to our Legal Help phone line with Legal Help Lawyer Jess Nunn.
'It was a complex and difficult call concerning family violence and a non-English speaking background client, and afforded the Attorney-General an insight into the challenges of providing services to many vulnerable people with complex issues,' said Jess.
The Attorney-General also had a positive discussion with staff about ORBIT, a new online booking tool being used by Victoria Legal Aid and community legal centres across Victoria.
ORBIT helps people get easier, faster access to legal services and has supported more than 5000 people since August 2017.
