Exciting opportunity to deliver high-quality legal services at the Moorabbin Justice Centre

Tuesday, 29 January 2019

We are inviting applications from legal practitioners to participate in our new rostered duty lawyer service at the Moorabbin Justice Centre. Applications close on Friday 1 March 2019.

Deirdre McCann, Managing Lawyer of the Dandenong Regional Office at Victoria Legal Aid, is encouraging interested practitioners to find out more about working in this high quality, client-focused service.

‘This is a fantastic opportunity to help achieve long-lasting change for the community and make a real difference in people’s lives,’ said Deirdre.

‘As a duty lawyer you will be part of a dynamic, high-performing team that strives for better access to justice in the community and to provide a voice for those who need it.’

Currently Victoria Legal Aid staff from our Frankston and Dandenong offices provide duty lawyer services at Moorabbin with some additional ad-hoc services from private barristers.

From April 2019, lawyers from the private sector will take part in our roster – helping to deliver consistent, flexible services while we meet growing demand for summary crime lawyer services at Moorabbin.

Rostered private practitioner duty lawyer services will be paid $157 (GST inclusive) per hour up to a maximum of six hours (totaling $942 per day excluding lunch adjournment, time spent on privately funded matters, and matters funded under a grant of legal assistance).

Victoria Legal Aid funds the delivery of duty lawyer services at numerous Court locations across metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria.

In 2017–2018, we delivered over 93,000 services through duty lawyer schemes provided by our in-house practice and the private profession, including barristers.

Information session

An information session about the new scheme and the application and selection process will be held on Friday 15 February at the Dandenong office.
