National Independent Children’s Lawyer training is now open

Monday, 7 January 2019

The National Independent Children’s Lawyer (ICL) training has been redeveloped and the new program is now open for registrations. The program has been developed by National Legal Aid in conjunction with legal aid commissions across the country.

The new program has two phases.

Phase one includes six online training modules delivered through the national ICL website, comprising lecture-style videos by national subject matter experts on various legal and social science topics of relevance to ICL work.

Each module also includes the lecturer’s papers on their topics and other essential resources. Multiple choice questionnaires to test learning and knowledge follow each video and resource.

Once all modules are completed satisfactorily, a certificate of completion will be issued, and trainees can apply to register for phase two. This second phase is one day of face-to-face training using a nationally developed case scenario and workshops.

How can I register for the training?

You will need to visit the training centre on the national ICL website and follow the instructions to register for the online modules.

The face-to-face training will take place at Marvel Stadium (Docklands) on 5 April 2019 and registrations will open shortly. There are other training sessions in Canberra on 15 March, Sydney on 18 October and Brisbane on 15 November.

How much will it cost?

The online modules are $400 and the face-to-face training is $550.

The training is a prerequisite for inclusion on our Independent Children’s Lawyer panel. However, completion of the course does not guarantee inclusion on the panel and additional selection criteria will apply.

Please see Independent Children’s Lawyer Panel for further information.
