We are pleased to confirm that clinical psychologist George Habib is joining the Board of Victoria Legal Aid for a three-year term.

‘As a clinical psychologist who has worked in a number of areas covered by VLA, I have had an abiding interest in the intersection between medicine and the law,' George said.

‘I recognise the necessity for checks and balances of state sanctioned power and have, through my working life, also seen the outcome when those checks and balances are not sufficient.'

As the Deputy Director of Psychology at Monash Health and a board member of the Therapeutic Treatment Board, George will bring considerable experience from the health, government and welfare sectors to VLA.

‘I bring a knowledge of the health outcomes of people in our community who are disempowered and marginalised. I also bring a knowledge of the cumulative toll on staff, in working with people who are disadvantaged and marginalised, if we don’t have the right structures and supports to sustain the work,' George said.

Over the past 25 years George has worked in forensic settings, child protection, the non-government sector, sexual assault services and mental health services.

He is focused on improving our client’s experience of the services we provide.

‘I have seen the social determinants of health very clearly through my clinical practice, with inequality playing a central role in the rise of mental health problems, and subsequent patient involvement with the legal system,’ George said.

‘I hope that my focus on using evidence in informing decision-making, and my experience in service design and program implementation should add to the workings of the VLA Board.’

‘My professional background and experience adds to the diversity of the Board and I think this will be a good thing.’

Acting Managing Director of VLA, Peter Noble has warmly welcomed George’s appointment.

‘We all look forward to the benefit of George’s expertise, especially in supporting the development of better safety and wellbeing initiatives at VLA,’ Peter said.

‘I know we will also draw on his substantial experience in understanding the complex drivers of client disadvantage, the patterns of repeating and clustering legal need and the importance of complimentary therapeutic approaches to addressing legal problems.’

George has been appointed to the VLA board by the Attorney-General, Martin Pakula.
