Wednesday, 29 March 2017

The Victorian Drug Court seeks to further improve the safety of the community by focusing on the rehabilitation of offenders with a drug or alcohol dependency and providing assistance in reintegrating them into the community.

Recently, the Victorian Drug Court expanded to Melbourne.

The court administers and supervises all drug treatment orders (DTO) pursuant to s18Z of the Sentencing Act 1991. To be suitable for a DTO, the accused must satisfy certain criteria including:

  • offences linked to dependency (drugs and/or alcohol)
  • pleading guilty to charges before the Victorian Drug Court
  • usual place of residence within catchment area
  • not suitable if offences were sexual in nature or if actual bodily harm was caused, unless harm was minor in nature
  • not suitable if on parole or subject to current sentencing order from County or Supreme Courts.

The Victorian Drug Court is now accepting referrals for suitable clients and referrals can be made via the Drug Court registrar at
