The Law Institute of Victoria in association with the Children’s Court recently ran a training session on youth control orders (YCOs) and new bail laws with speakers including President Belinda Wilson, Judge Chambers and Magistrate Bowles. The session was recorded and is available to community legal centres (CLCs) and panel practitioners on our Vimeo site.

Guide to youth control orders for lawyers

Youth control orders recently became available as a sentence in the Children’s Court from 1 June 2018.

We have produced key content to assist practitioners with navigating this new process at Guide to youth control orders for lawyers.

The web page includes a range of useful information, including:

  • when and why the court may make a youth control order
  • requirements before a youth control order can be made
  • requirements of youth control orders, including reporting and monitoring
  • when and how a youth control order may be revoked
  • other changes related to youth control orders
  • youth control order resources.

We also have precedent letters to assist with YCO client files. As previously advised in Legal Aid Brief, new fees are available for practitioners appearing on behalf of young people being considered for a YCO, and for the post-order monitoring, variation and revocation processes.
