Actions from the Child Protection Legal Aid Services Review – Client access

We want to work with others to increase the availability of services across Victoria for children, young people, parents and carers involved the child protection system. 

Action 29

We will work with the Children’s Court of Victoria, the Magistrates’ Court of Victoria, the Department of Health and Human Services, Corrections, the Mental Health Tribunal and others to implement the use of video-conferencing or other technology for the purpose of providing advice and, where eligible, representation to people in custody or in a mental health facility, who may otherwise be excluded from participating in child protection proceedings. 

Status – implementation expected by 2018.

Action 30

We will work with the Department of Health and Human Services to establish a process for greater consistency in arrangements for children in out of home care (kinship, foster care, residential care and secure welfare) to provide instructions to lawyers, including the better use of technology.

Status – implementation expected by 2018.

Action 31

We will continue funding Women’s Legal Service and Loddon Campaspe Community Legal Centre to provide child protection services and work with community legal centres to identify other geographical areas where community legal centres may address unmet need.

Status – implementation expected by 2020.

Action 32

We will explore alternative funding arrangements for private practitioners in regional areas to increase the number of child protection panel firms in areas of unmet need.

Status – implementation expected by 2019.
