We provide services in general family law matters. We also have specialist teams of independent children’s lawyers and child support lawyers.

What we can help you with

Experienced family lawyers at all Victoria Legal Aid (VLA) offices can offer help on:

• divorce and separation
• parenting disputes
• intervention orders
• other family law issues, including injunctions, location and recovery orders, and spousal maintenance.

Family lawyers are located at our Melbourne and regional offices. The Melbourne office also has independent children’s lawyers and child support lawyers.

You can attend one of our free family law workshops. See:

• Contravention workshop – how to prepare a contravention application if someone is breaching (disobeying) court orders about your children.

Independent children's lawyers

Sometimes in family law cases the court will ask VLA to appoint an independent children’s lawyer. This lawyer helps the court decide what arrangements are in the best interests of the child or children. The court can make an order allowing the lawyer to find out the child’s views.
