Victoria Legal Aid (VLA) is committed to ensuring its website is available to the widest possible audience, including readers using assistive technology or accessibility features.
VLA’s website is designed to meet best practice guidelines and strives to maintain conformance to the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.
General page design
All pages on VLA’s website have been designed to adhere to guidelines for accessible web design. The website features:
- pages designed for a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels
- a Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) used to control page layout and visual design, and has been written according to CSS 2.1 specifications
- well structured Hypertext Mark-up Language (HTML) to assist users accessing the site via non-visual means, such as screen-reading software
- skip links directly to the main page content, navigation and frequently accessed links
- tables only used to present tabular information
- sizable text that can be increased or decreased using browser controls or via the site’s text controls
- alternative text for images and non-text elements (does not include decorative images)
- long descriptions to explain complex non-text elements and images
- a site map to provide information about the layout of the website
- a logical tab order
- structured headers to aid legibility
