Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Clerkship Program

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Clerkship Program

Every year we offer a clerkship program to law students who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.

Our clerkship is unique because:

  • we only offer our clerkships to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander law students
  • you can commence a clerkship at any stage of your law degree
  • we offer multiple part time and full time positions each year
  • you can return in successive years until you have finished your studies
  • placements are available in our Criminal Law program, Family Law program or our Civil Justice program in Melbourne
  • positions are also available in our suburban and regional offices
  • you may also participate in our community legal education and law reform activities
  • we aim to accommodate your needs, regarding location and areas of interests.

'Completing the Victoria Legal Aid Aboriginal Clerkship is the single most significant form of practical legal education I have received. It is unparalleled in its breadth of exposure to the real life legal problems of vulnerable Victorians. I highly recommend the clerkship to anyone who is passionate about social justice and aspires to pursue a career within this area' – Aboriginal clerkship participant Shane Fry.

'I got my first taste of working at Victoria Legal Aid while undertaking a clerkship with the Aboriginal Clerkship Program. The program was a great stepping stone into the New Lawyers Program, in that it gave me valuable work experience while providing an insight into the challenges faced by Victoria Legal Aid lawyers' – New Lawyer Rebecca Digney.
