Additional funding for legal assistance sector in federal budget

Additional funding for the legal assistance sector was announced in last night’s federal budget for 2021–22.

The Federal Government is committing an additional $310 million to the National Legal Assistance Partnership, including dedicated funding for community legal centres and Aboriginal community controlled organisations.

The budget announcements include:

  • $129 million for women’s legal services to help vulnerable women access legal assistance.
  • $85 million to expand the successful Family Advocacy and Support Services (FASS) to new locations including regional areas.
  • $60 million for dedicated legal assistance services for people experiencing mental health issues.
  • $26 million for Family Violence Prevention Legal Services to better support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and children experiencing violence.
  • $17.1 million to expand access to legal and mental health support services for women experiencing family violence in rural and remote areas.
  • Significant investment in the family law system including the extension of the small property pool pilot and the family violence cross examination scheme.
