Be part of the Criminal Trial Preferred Barrister List

Tuesday, 16 April 2019

The Selection Committee for the Criminal Trial Preferred Barrister List meets quarterly to consider expressions of interest for membership of the list.

The committee is chaired by our Executive Director of Legal Practice (or their delegate), and includes the Executive Director of Criminal Law Services (or their delegate), and Chief Counsel, Victoria Legal Aid Chambers (or their delegate).

Acting Executive Director Legal Practice Gayathri Paramasivam said the committee plays a vital role.

‘Victoria Legal Aid has a statutory obligation to provide legal aid in the most effective, economic and efficient manner, and having oversight around the quality of barristers is one way in which we do this.

‘We support diverse briefing practices and want to ensure our list has a strong representation of women, Indigenous and culturally and linguistically diverse barristers,' said Gayathri.

If you would like your application to be considered at the next meeting in June 2019, please:

  • ensure you meet the entry requirements and assessment guidelines
  • download and complete the Criminal Trial Preferred Barrister List expression of interest form
  • submit your expression of interest via email to preferredbarristerlist@vla.vic.gov.au by 5 May 2019.
