Call for lawyers to support the Victorian bushfire response

Call for lawyers to support the Victorian bushfire response

Thursday, 9 January 2020

As bushfires continue to affect Victorian communities, Disaster Legal Help Victoria is calling for lawyers to volunteer their time and expertise to support people to get back on their feet.

Legal problems can surface quickly during and after a bushfire. Disaster Legal Help is available to help Victorians affected by the recent bushfire with issues including:

  • dealing with insurance claims
  • replacing lost or destroyed documents, including wills and titles
  • tenancy issues, such as disputes with landlords and outstanding rent
  • debt and other financial problems resulting from loss of employment and the cost of dealing with the aftermath of a disaster.

Alongside our Disaster Legal Help partners, the Law Institute of Victoria, the Federation of Community Legal Centres, the Victorian Bar and Justice Connect, we are co-ordinating the legal response to the Victorian bushfire crisis.

‘The impact of these fires has been devastating and we understand it will take some time for people to work through the aftermath, with many fires still active and bushfire season continuing,' Acting Executive Director of Civil Justice, Access and Equity at Victoria Legal Aid Joel Townsend said.

'Disaster Legal Help will be available over the coming weeks and months to help people with their legal issues.’

We are now calling on lawyers from across Victoria to express their interest in assisting with the bushfire response over the coming weeks and months. This could involve visiting the impacted areas to provide on-the-ground assistance at community meetings and recovery centres.

We are particularly interested in hearing from:

  • lawyers based in Gippsland and North East Victoria
  • lawyers with experience in insurance, credit and debt, tenancy and accommodation and other disaster legal issues.
