Changes to our family and children’s law programs

Changes to our family and children’s law programs

Wednesday, 15 January 2020

Last year we announced consultations on possible changes in child protection, family law, independent children’s lawyer and personal safety intervention order services. These proposals were to address the pressures of growing demand, and our need to return to a sustainable budget.

Thank you for the feedback

Thank you to everyone who participated in these consultations. Having considered the feedback we received, we can now advise of our decisions and next steps.

The decisions

In summary, we have decided to proceed with most of the proposals in some form, but many have been modified following consultations. Some of the measures will come into effect on Monday 17 February 2020. Others will come into effect on 1 July 2020. Changes will only apply to applicable to new grant approvals made on or after the commencement date, not to existing grants of aid. There will be further practical communications about the measures coming into force as they approach commencement.

More information about the decisions and timeframes is available on our website.

Future outlook

Our financial circumstances continue to be challenging and demand for legal assistance has continued to grow in the current year. We have flagged that it is likely we will need to consider further savings measures. We will of course consult publicly again before we make any new decisions or changes.

These are difficult decisions to make and we understand that they will have an impact on clients, the justice system and yourselves as practitioners and stakeholders. We appreciate the feedback and engagement in this difficult task. Thank you for your ongoing support.
