Congratulations to the following Victoria Legal Aid staff on winning a prestigious Law Institute of Victoria (LIV) 2012 Legal Award:

  • Director Legal Practice Meagan Keogh: Accredited Specialist Achievement Award

  • Shepparton Managing Lawyer Ian Michaelson: Regional Lawyer of the Year Award.

Meagan, an Accredited Specialist in criminal law since 2002, was recognised for mobilising staff and practice resources to assist 81 staff and private practitioners to undertake Specialist Accreditation over the last two years.

Ian was recognised for his commitment to regional practice and his immersion in the local community, including his involvement in establishing our Goulburn Valley office and work in our Morwell office.

Program Manager Mental Health and Disability Advocacy Robyn Mills and Program Manager Child Protection Louise Akenson were both awarded a LIV Certificate of Service for their significant contribution to the legal profession.

Congratulations also go to Footscray Community Legal Centre Executive Director and part-time Victoria Legal Aid lawyer Denis Nelthorpe for winning the Community Lawyer of the Year Award for his work on the National Bulk Debt Project.

Managing Director Bevan Warner commended the winners for their outstanding achievements and leadership.

'It is pleasing to see that the diversity of our practice and the skill of our lawyers was reflected in the staff who won or were nominated for awards. This recognition helps improve understanding of the importance of legal aid in the wider legal sector.

'Meagan has worked tirelessly to ensure that all those doing legal aid work – staff lawyers, private practitioners and CLC lawyers – deliver high quality legal services to our priority clients; and Ian has set the benchmark for regional community access to the legal system.

'I also commend our Senior Lawyers Eleanore Fritze and David Farrelly, who recently joined Victoria Legal Aid, on being deserved finalists in the Rising Star of the Year and Regional Lawyer of the Year award categories.'
