Family Violence Panel first quality audit – a positive result

Family Violence Panel first quality audit – a positive result

Tuesday, 19 March 2019

During 2018 we conducted our first Family Violence Panel quality audit. The overall majority of panel members passed the audit and did not require further support to meet the practice standards.

The Quality Audit team noted a generally high standard of quality service amongst practitioners across the state.

Key facts and findings include:

  • 17 practitioners from the child protection panel were quality audited
  • 85 practitioner files were reviewed by the Quality Audit team
  • 65 per cent of practitioners audited practiced in regional Victoria
  • 234 instances of non-adherence to the Practice Standards were identified.

Over 50 per cent of those instances relate to the following four practice standards:

  • Being mindful of any actual or potential conflict that may arise during the course of a matter, and inform VLA of the details of any conflict as soon as the conflict arises so that the matter can be re-assigned.
  • Provide a final report and final account to VLA and close the file in ATLAS within 30 days of the matter being legally finalised or the grant of legal assistance being terminated.
  • Have up-to-date knowledge and understanding of legal aid obligations and processes.
  • Maintain overall responsibility for the matter (for individual Panel Certifiers), and ensure that the client is aware of this responsibility.

We are supporting our panel practitioners to meet the standards through additional training, education and targeted resources.

Strengthening our partnership with private practitioners

We would like to thank our panel practitioner partners for working with us and providing valuable feedback during the quality audit process. We look forward to further strengthening our partnership with private practitioners who conduct work on behalf of Victoria Legal Aid.
