New Associate Director Family Violence Response, Leanne Sinclair

We are pleased to announce that Leanne Sinclair has been appointed to a new role responsible for co-ordinating our response to recommendations of the Victorian Royal Commission into Family Violence.

As the new Associate Director Family Violence Response, Leanne will draw heavily from her skills and knowledge honed while working as our Program Manager Family Violence.

She will ensure that Victoria Legal Aid’s response to the Royal Commission’s recommendations are client focussed and will improve services and outcomes for vulnerable families and children.

Leanne said that she was keen to design and pilot new services, including preventative programs in partnership with other agencies, and to work more closely with the community legal centre sector.

‘Jointly planning our response is so essential in the context of growing demand for services, and fundamental to ensuring that a person’s need for legal help is identified as early as possible.

‘Working closely with government departments that are leading the implementation of different recommendations is also important.

‘This might take the form of our contributing to legislative and policy responses, and advocating for additional resources needed to ensure that all sectors impacted by the implementation of the Royal Commission’s recommendations are supported.’

In 2016–17, we expect to fund seven per cent more grants of legal assistance overall, with an 11 per cent increase anticipated in family violence.

The State Government committed to implementing all of the Royal Commission’s recommendations but early investment has focused on funding for front line services such as women’s refuges, housing services and perpetrator programs rather than legal assistance.

Leanne said that many recommendations will have significant impact on the justice sector, including Victoria Legal Aid, which has so far not received additional funding.

‘Over the next year we will need to advocate for additional resources that will enable us to deliver on the Royal Commission’s recommendations,’ she said.

Leanne will start her new role on Monday 26 September. You can connect with Leanne on LinkedIn.

The now vacant Program Manager Family Violence role will be advertised shortly.
