Shepparton road trip strengthens insight into regional issues

Tuesday, 27 November 2018

Our Board was able to see and hear first-hand some of the issues faced by our clients, and our practitioners in the Goulburn Valley when they visited Shepparton for an off-site meeting this week.

The Board was joined by the Senior Executive Team (SET), and hosted a stakeholders’ event on Tuesday night. Attending the function was Regional Coordinating Magistrate Stella Stuthridge, court staff, prosecutions, local practitioners and community legal sector workers.

While the impressive new $73m court precinct, and the many changes which have resulted since the precinct opened in April 2018 were a hot topic of conversation, delivery of legal services throughout north-east Victoria, recruitment, the huge impact of new bail laws and adequate resourcing were also part of many people’s conversations.

The SET/Board meeting on Wednesday morning was followed by lunch with the 11-strong Shepparton team. The local team then took the Board and SET on a tour of the new Shepparton Law Courts precinct.

Shepparton Managing Lawyer Erica Molyneaux said the visit by the Board and SET was appreciated, and the Shepparton team valued the opportunity to become more familiar with the Board and develop further their connections with SET.

‘When the Board consider issues impacting Shepparton, they now have first-hand knowledge of the office, the community and the court precinct.

‘They can picture where we work and where we go to court.

‘They have heard for themselves, of the issues faced by those working in the local justice sector, and they now also know of the success stories,’ said Erica.
