Springvale Monash Legal Service to deliver duty lawyer service at the Family Advocacy and Support Services

Wednesday, 14 April 2021

We’re pleased to announce that after a competitive process we have selected Springvale Monash Legal Service to deliver duty lawyer services as part of the Family Advocacy and Support Services (FASS) at the Melbourne registry of the Family Court of Australia and the Federal Circuit Court of Australia.

FASS is an integrated service where duty lawyers and family violence support workers provide holistic support to families impacted by family violence. FASS is currently being delivered remotely in response to COVID-19 restrictions.

‘It’s important that we take a considered, collaborative approach to providing support to families who need it,’ said Gayathri Paramasivam, Victoria Legal Aid Associate Director, Family Law.

‘We need to deliver services that are responsive to people’s individual needs. FASS is a key way to deliver integrated support to families experiencing violence.’

Since we established FASS in 2017, duty lawyer services at the Melbourne registry have been delivered by Victoria Legal Aid (VLA) and the Women’s Legal Service Victoria in its capacity as the Family Law Legal Service (FLLS). However, on 30 June 2021, FLLS will cease its role in FASS, while the Women’s Legal Service Victoria will continue to provide limited duty lawyer services to female clients only, outside of the FASS program funding.

Springvale Monash Legal Service was chosen by a panel as the preferred provider to deliver duty lawyer services at the Melbourne Registry from 1 July 2021 as part of FASS.

We’re now developing and implementing a transition plan to ensure that FASS services remain stable and in place throughout the transition of providers. With support from FLLS and VLA, Springvale Monash Legal Service will be ready to deliver FASS duty lawyer services from 1 July 2021.

‘We look forward to having Springvale Monash Legal Service join FASS as we collectively continue to deliver successful FASS services for vulnerable families at the Melbourne and Dandenong family law registries,’ said Gayathri.

FASS was set up with funding from the Commonwealth Government and is now funded under the National Legal Assistance Partnership.
