Trial Counsel Development Program now recruiting

Trial Counsel Development Program now recruiting

Wednesday, 9 November 2016

The Trial Counsel Development Program is an initiative that was introduced by Victoria Legal Aid in 2011. It was designed to deliver unique training opportunities to selected Junior Counsel at the Victorian Bar by partnering them with senior trial advocates. The program requires juniors to actively participate in the preparation and conduct of trials with a more experienced trial advocate, and the junior is expected to help prepare submissions, make pre trial arguments (if relevant) and cross examine witnesses.

The program aims to give junior trial advocates the opportunity to undertake trial work in a supported and collaborative environment.

Victoria Legal Aid has recruited close to 40 senior advocates as Lead Counsel in the program, with a mix of Senior Juniors and Silks.

We are currently looking to recruit up to eight Junior Counsel to participate in the 2017-18 intake of the program. Each Junior Counsel can expect to undertake two trials with the support of an experienced trial advocate.

As part of the program, Juniors will also be given the opportunity to participate in skills-based advocacy training provided by Victoria Legal Aid and other service providers.
