The Summary Crime Evaluation commenced in late February 2016 and is nearing the stage when the final report will be available. The Evaluation has focused on the appropriateness and sustainability of the Summary Crime Program in light of the introduction of guidelines for service delivery in 2012–2013.
Our research alliance partners, The Law and Justice Foundation NSW, have consulted extensively via interviews and focus groups statewide. Private practitioners, members of the Victorian Bar, Victoria Police, representatives from the Department of Justice and Regulation, court staff and court support services and Magistrates have been involved in this consultation. We have also consulted with Victoria Legal Aid staff across all offices.
We have received positive feedback from both our internal and external partners about how focus group sessions have been facilitated. A high level Advisory Group has also been established representing all parts of the summary justice sector, including a representative from an interstate legal aid commission. Information obtained from consultations together with Victoria Legal Aid data is now being analysed. A report is due in early 2017.
Contributions from across the criminal justice sector have been key to the Evaluation and we thank all of those involved for their time and valuable feedback. The report will be an important part of our future funding advocacy and will be used to inform service delivery improvements in consultation with our partners.
