Support our Trial Counsel Development Program

Following a highly competitive recruitment process, our Trial Counsel Development Program (TCDP) recently offered places to 15 junior counsel to join our 2022–23 group. We have increased the number of places in response to the backlog of trials and shortage of trial counsel.

The program provides an invaluable opportunity for junior counsel to gain meaningful trial experience under the tutelage of highly skilled, experienced and respected criminal trial counsel.

We encourage all indictable crime panel firms to consider the program for legally aided matters that are listed for trial in the next 12 to 18 months, and which meet the program criteria.

Chief Counsel of Victoria Legal Aid Chambers, Julia Munster, is one of the program’s leaders, and recently led a TCDP junior in a County Court trial.

She believes the program is a win-win situation for junior counsel and Victoria Legal Aid.

‘I was very impressed with counsel’s care, preparation, skill and forensic judgement in the trial I led.

‘Because of the program, the client had the benefit of two counsel, instead of one.

‘I encourage practitioners to support the program as it is an investment in the Bar, enables you to observe junior counsel in action in a supportive environment and can only benefit your clients,’ said Julia.

Now in its 11th year, the program assists barristers to further develop their criminal trial capabilities, and ensures those involved in the criminal justice system have access to experienced trial counsel.
