Taking an outcomes approach

Our outcomes framework identifies the impact of our work. It defines the difference we want to make in helping people address and prevent legal problems and will shape our strategic directions to 2030.

Outcomes Framework 2022 - 2030

Outcomes are the difference that we make for our clients, communities and systems, as a result of our work.

Our inaugural outcomes framework is an eight-year view that links what we do, helping people with their legal problems, with our vision and purpose.

Our outcomes framework aims to:

  • increase access to justice for our clients
  • improve legal understanding in the community
  • support a collaborative legal assistance sector
  • influence justice and other services to make laws and systems fairer for people
  • create an effective and sustainable VLA.

Our Chief Operating Officer Cameron Hume says the framework will guide our services, programs, and strategies.

‘Taking an outcomes and evidence-based approach to legal assistance service design and delivery will make our services more responsive to the needs and voices of legal aid clients and our core purpose,’ he said.

‘Measuring outcomes makes us focus on the things that really matter – can people equitably access our services across the state? What experience do people have of our services? Do clients have a strong voice in our services and in systems reform? And have we helped people to resolve or prevent legal problems?’

The outcomes framework will guide future strategic plans – our soon to be released Strategy 26 and Strategy 30.

‘We set priority actions and initiatives that we will work towards in each four-year period, aligned with our outcomes,’ Cameron said.

‘Focusing on outcomes in our strategies, planning, and service design supports us to think creatively with clients and partners about the difference we want to make, beyond delivering services.

‘This assists in our aims to be client-centred – to work with clients to identify what is most important to them and improve our services accordingly.’
