We welcome the passing of the Statewide Treaty Bill in the Victorian Parliament.

This historic moment marks a significant step in acknowledging the truths of our history and working towards a better future for First Peoples communities.

‘We welcome the Treaty and the significant and positive impact it will create in justice outcomes for First Peoples,’ said our CEO Toby Hemming.

'At Victoria Legal Aid, we are deeply committed to following the lead, expertise and solutions of First Peoples towards achieving better outcomes.’

Through the Yoorrook Justice Commission, we heard of First People’s experiences of systemic racism and ongoing injustices, leading to over-representation in the justice system.

This is reflected in our daily work, where one in ten of our clients identify as First Nations people – a stark contrast to the one per cent representation in Victoria’s population.

The Treaty process gives us a meaningful pathway for change and the opportunity to work in genuine partnership with First Peoples to embed self-determination in our services.

First Nations Services Executive Director, Ashley Morris, recognised the tireless efforts of First Peoples communities in working towards this milestone.

‘This is a moment in history – the outcome of years of hard work and fierce advocacy by First Peoples across the state,’ he said.

‘I’m excited for the opportunities Treaty presents for true First Peoples’ self-determination in Victoria.’

We look forward to working with the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service, Djirra and other Aboriginal community-controlled organisations in this new chapter for First Peoples justice in Victoria.
