We are proud to support the Wyndham Law Courts which opened this week, delivering safe, accessible and responsive justice services for the local community.
The Wyndham Law Courts is the largest court complex outside of the CBD and is estimated to hold more than 50,000 court hearings within the next decade.
The precinct, under construction for almost three years, was officially opened by Attorney-General Sonya Kilkenny after a moving Welcome to Bunurong Country from Uncle Mark Brown.
‘The Wyndham Law Courts are a massive investment in Melbourne’s west,’ she said.
‘They will ensure more people get their day in court and get the help they need – all in one place.’
The opening reception was attended by Victoria Legal Aid (VLA) representatives, including Chief Executive Officer Toby Hemming, Regions and Service Delivery Executive Director Peter Noble, and Executive Director Ashley Morris and Director Melissa Harrison from our First Nations Services team.
The state-of-the-art precinct boasts 13 courtrooms, four hearing rooms and three mediation suites.
There is safe entry, dedicated circulation pathways and waiting areas for family violence victim-survivors, a significant upgrade from the Werribee Courts which have now closed.
Increased access to justice
Alongside legal assistance sector partners the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service, Djirra, Westjustice, commUnity+ and panel practitioners, our role at the Wyndham Law Courts will be to provide legal representation, advice and information.
People at court for a hearing can speak to one of our duty lawyers for help with intervention orders, criminal matters (for young people and adults), child protection and tenancy cases.
Our office is located on the first floor.
‘This is the start of an important new chapter for Melbourne’s west, prioritising justice services and improving the experience for people who use them,’ said Liz, who has managed the Wyndham project for VLA.
‘We are proud to have been involved in such a significant project, one that will deliver easier access to services – both legal and non-legal – to help people resolve the issues in their lives.’
The Magistrates’ Court, Children’s Court and the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal all start operations in November.
The precinct will also house diversionary and First Peoples justice programs, with a Koori Court and Specialist Family Violence Court to begin from 2027.
People-first design
Like the Bendigo Law Courts before it, the Wyndham precinct has been designed with the needs of the community in mind.
We were pleased to be part of the design consultation process, which also included Bunurong Traditional Owners, court users, court staff, judicial officers and community groups.
The design prioritises the user experience, sustainability and technological capability.
To reduce stress and create a sense of calm, there is an abundance of natural light (including in courtrooms), neutral colours, and multiple open-air terraces with greenery for the public to enjoy.
With its façade inspired by the ‘red cliffs’ eroded by the Werribee River, the building also includes many First Nations artworks and an interactive wall for kids at the Children’s Court.
Boonwurrung language is embedded across the courts as well as First Nations landscaping to support the creation of modern songlines, Court Services Victoria said.
Digital displays and kiosks are scattered throughout the complex, and there are remote hearing capabilities, and video conference and livestream functionality allowing cases to be heard sooner.
The Wyndham Law Courts is located next to the Werribee Police Station at 17 Basalt Road, Werribee.
