Fines: the law, your options

""

Published 1 October 2019

This free booklet is for anyone who has been fined in Victoria. It will help you understand your options.

It has information about:

  • what to do if you get a fine
  • what happens if you do not pay a fine
  • what to do if you disagree with a fine
  • special circumstances and family violence
  • what happens if you go to court
  • where to get help.

Updates on laws

Victoria Police can now send you a fine as an electronic penalty infringements notice (e-PIN). This means Victoria Police can send you a fine by email or multimedia messaging service (MMS) to your mobile phone. Police will only send you a fine this way if you agree to it. Be aware scammers may try to trick you by pretending to be the police when sending you an email or text message. To check if your fine is really from Victoria Police, you can contact Fines Victoria.

You can now apply for an infringement extension in some situations. For more information, visit Infringement extension on the Fines Victoria website.

There is a new 'special circumstances category'. This is for people with long-term issues that prevent them from paying fines or dealing with them another way. For more information, visit Special circumstances.

There have been changes to what offences or infringements go on your criminal record. For more information, visit Criminal records.
