We’re pleased to announce that following a competitive recruitment process, Kate Bundrock has been appointed as executive director for our Criminal Law team.

Kate has been acting in the role since late July, and prior to that was the director, Summary Crime and Therapeutic Justice. Kate started with us as a duty lawyer in our Shepparton office in 2004. Since then, she has held various roles across our regions and in the central business district, and also practiced for a short period at the Victorian Bar.

'I’m looking forward working with partners and stakeholders to improve outcomes for clients and the community,' said Kate.

'Legal assistance for people charged with criminal offences is vitally important. I’m keen to ensure that our services meet the needs of our clients, and that the work of private practitioners and community legal centres is valued and supported.

'I’m also looking forward to working alongside the newly established First Nations Services directorate to ensure that our criminal law service appropriately prioritises culture, acknowledges trauma and supports healing, addresses racism and promotes cultural safety,' said Kate.

Kate leads with her values and is a strong believer in the importance of legal assistance as a means to achieve social justice. She has a deep knowledge of our practice, the systems and sectors in which we work, and is a trusted leader both internally and externally.

Kate has strong advocacy experience, and this was most recently reflected in leading our response to bail reform and the passage of new youth justice legislation.

As with all executives at Victoria Legal Aid, Kate also supports a regional office in collaboration with our Regions and Service Delivery directorate and in this capacity works closely with our Mallee regional office.

Kate commences in the role from September 2, 2024. Please join us in congratulating Kate on her appointment.
