Housing and tenancy

Housing and tenancy
There are laws to protect the rights of tenants and set out the responsibilities of landlords. These include rules about:
- tenancy agreements
- bonds
- repairs
- eviction and ending a tenancy arrangement.
Note – rental laws are changing
New laws will provide more protections for renters. Some changes, including the ability to keep pets, have already been made. More changes will start 29 March 2021. To learn more about these changes, view the Changes to renting laws section on the Consumer Affairs Victoria website.
The rights and responsibilities of a tenant or landlord depend on the type of tenancy arrangements, for example, if you are:
- renting a place to live
- a rooming house resident
- a caravan park resident.
