Please read before calling our Legal Help phone line

Our phone line is in high demand. We appreciate your patience if you are put on hold. We suggest calling first thing in the morning at 8 am. You can also search our online legal information or chat to us online for general legal information and referral to other organisations.

Legal advice is only given to people who meet our priority guidelines. We may still provide links, information and referrals to other organisations.

How to get help over the phone

Get help over the phone by calling Legal Help on 1300 792 387 Monday to Friday, 8 am to 5 pm. See legal problems we don't give advice about. Legal advice is only provided through our phone line to clients who meet our priority guidelines.

Clients with existing matters – if you have a current grant assigned to our lawyers, call the local office directly and ask to speak with your lawyer. If you are calling 1300 792 387, select option 5 to speak to reception.

Queries about your legal aid grant application – if you want to speak to our Grants team about grants, go to grants enquiries.

Third parties – we provide a limited information and referral-only service to people who are calling on behalf of someone else. We can give some referrals to legal resources and explain our guidelines, however it is important for our team to speak to the person with the legal problem so that we can provide accurate and targeted legal help. For parents, carers or workers calling for children under 18, please call when your child is with you, if possible.

Matters outside of Victorian law – we cannot provide advice if your matter is not connected to the law in Victoria. Please contact the legal aid service in your state or territory.

Workers – if you are a worker, calling on behalf of a client, please call 1300 792 387 and select option 4. We can provide legal information but cannot provide advice without the client also being present.
